History

Begoñazpi in Txurdinaga

The number of students grew year after year and there was not enough space in the Karmelo street premises. Due to this, an idea was put forward to construct a new building.

After several vain negotiations with banking firms as well as with property developers, finally an adequate plot of land was found in Txurdinaga. Once an agreement had been reached with the owners, the project was put forward to Lázaro Anasagasti, the builder. The transaction consisted of the land in Santutxu in exchange for the construction of the new Ikastola in Txurdinaga in agreement with the needed quality and space which the building required. Mr Anasagasti accepted the proposal and he himself footed the bill of all the costs, that is, the land, work permits and the total construction of the building. After a few days of ecclesiastic procedures, vicar Karmelo Etxenagusia was contacted, he himself prepared all the necessary documents with great speed, and he obtained written approval from the Vatican as well. Once this approval was obtained, the exchange was signed at the Diocese's office.

In 1981, the new Begoñazpi Ikastola was built in 11 months. Thanks to the collaboration of: Anasagasti and his team, the Management Team, parents and Diocese, everything had a happy ending. From that moment onwards, the former naming Begoñazpiko was changed for that of Begoñazpi (1970-1970).

The Ikastola has always encountered difficulties, yet our demand has always been great therefore in 1998 our educational offer was increased from 2 to 3 classes and subsequently from 3 to 4, with which our offer has doubled. In order to do so new additions were undertaken up until its present state, which has more than 11,000 m2 constructed in 5 buildings: 1 Pre-School building, 2 Primary School buildings, 1 Secondary Education and Bachillerato building and 1 Sports Complex; with a plot of land of more than 20,000 m2.

During the 2005/06 school year the Ikastola has 1,193 students, 77 teachers and 5 staff members who work in the administration and caretaking of the Ikastola. Moreover, we also have staff who are from other companies which have been hired on for tasks such as the taking care of students, canteen, kitchen or the cleaning of facilities. Adding up there are currently more than 100 people who work in Begoñazpi.

The Ikastola has made a well earned name and reputation for itself throughout its 35 years, and we would like to continue to maintain and enhance what we have obtained during so many years of hard work. To do so, the development of innovative projects, the in-house training and updating of our teaching staff, the implementation of quality management systems, multilinguilism, participating in a variety of European school projects, and so on make the families who are part of our educational community be able to take part in a great Educational Project.
